This practice succeeded in a design competition for an extension to the Northern Midlands Council Chambers, with a proposal to provide the additional space required by inserting a new floor within the existing volume under the original roof. This allowed the existing external facades to remain completely intact, meeting the project constraints on a very frugal budget.
As well as providing additional floor space, the renovations included a new interior entry lobby in the form of a cylinder shaped internal atrium. The internal side of the new walls were completely clad with panels faced with discarded merino leather, fashioned by leather sculptor Garry Greenwood to symbolise the surrounding rural environment.
The Council Chambers was formerly the Longford Courthouse, and the council chamber / courtroom was restored as part of the works.
